If you love the coziness of vintage decor pieces but want to update the look with more of a modern touch, then these 7 quick tips for vintage modern home decor are for you.
If you want to achieve a sleek yet lived in look then these quick tips will make the design process flow smoothly. The title itself, “Vintage Modern” may come off as an oxymoron to most but I believe that’s the best way to describe this style. It’s the perfect marriage between the two. It combines the clean lines of modern design with the cozy, homey feel of vintage pieces.
1. PAINT WALLS WHITE
Start with a blank slate by painting the walls white. I used the Ultra Pure White by Behr. It was the perfect hue of white and allowed the decor to speak for itself.
2. CREATE CONTRAST
Bring out contrasting colors by incorporating black or dark furniture such as the dresser, bed frame, and night stand. This stands out beautifully against the white walls. This is also where you get the modern feel with straight lined bed frames and the contrasting colors.
- Black or Dark Hued Furniture against White Walls.
- Dark Decor Pieces
3. MIX DIFFERENT TEXTURES
Using different materials and textures gives off a cozy ambience. This brings life to the sleek modern look without making it too busy and keeping the airy feel to it. You want to think earthy decor pieces. It brings a grounding energy to the room. Items to use include:
- Rugged Wood Pieces
- Marble Slabs
- Wood Shelving
- Vintage Stone or Ceramic Vases
- Jute Carpets
- Rattan Decor (Baskets, Headboard, Dresser, Chair, etc.)
4. BRING IN THE VINTAGE PIECES
Include decor pieces that bring out the cozy, lived-in, homey ambience. Usually if too many modern pieces are used then it can make the space feel a bit clinical and too much like a gallery rather than a home. Bringing in these antique items fixes that problem instantly. Some items you can incorporate are:
- Vintage Landscape Paintings (Create a gallery wall)
- Rustic Wood Tray
- Rustic Wood Nightstand
- Stone Vases
- Antique Gold Candle Holder
- Gold Ornate Mirror
- Stone Base Lamps
- Wooden Wall Shelves
5. INCORPORATE MODERN DECOR
Now for the Modern flare. To bring the design back to the 21st century we’ll include some pieces that freshen up the space and balance out the new and lived-in. Some items you can incorporate are:
- Modern Geometric Lamp
- Marble or Gold Candle Holder
- Modern Abstract Line Artwork
- Marble Side Table
- Marble Wall Shelves
6. ADD NATURAL ELEMENTS
Another great way to bring texture into the home is with plants whether they be faux or real. I usually opt for the natural greenery when possible but finding the perfect, aesthetically-appealing plants can be a challenge so whatever you’re able to find is usable. When picking out your greenery go for plants that have a grayish hue to them. Some items you can incorporate are:
- Olive Trees
- Eucalyptus Stems
- Flocked Lambs Ear Stems
- Flocked Dusty Miller Stems
7. ADD WARMTH
Bringing warmth into a space is another essential aspect to make a home cozy. You want to think of soft materials and stick to neutral tones mainly in the nude, tan, gray, or brown categories. Some items you can incorporate are:
- Throw Blankets
- Textured Throw Pillows
- Candles
- Rugs
- Warm Tones
- Wood
- Warm Lighting and Lamps
- Wall Art
