When you think of your bathroom your main concern is most likely design. But when the products start stacking up in the drawers and cabinets and we just turn a blind eye that’s when the problem starts. Let’s go over these 8 simple bathroom organization tips to getting your personal spa organized.
1. Remove all products and bins from your drawers and cabinets.
Starting off with a clean slate is key to any organization project. Being able to physically see what space you have to work with is game changing. You’ll also be able to see all of the products you have that have been hiding beneath the junk!
This forces you to get to work and finish it the same day. Nobody wants to see a pile of junk in their home so when you plop all of this junk on your table or floor then you’re forced to take care of it.
2. Clean the surfaces.
You’ll want to wipe off all of the drawers and cabinets once you remove all of your products. You can even vacuum the drawers if there are bigger messes to clean. These surfaces get neglected since they are usually under a jumble of stuff.
To clean off stains you can use one of these tips (Inspired by Molly Maid):
- A baking soda paste (equal parts baking soda and water). Rub the mixture into the wood drawer and wipe with a microfiber cloth when stain is removed.
- Get a microfiber cloth and put toothpaste that’s non-gel based. Rub the stain and wipe away with a damp cloth when done.
- Petroleum jelly is another great tip. Allow it to remain on the stain for at least 8 hours then wipe it off.
3. Create 2 Separate Piles.
Now, create 2 piles of your products: “Keep” and “Throw Away.” The best way to begin this organization journey no matter what you’re cleaning out, is to get rid of the old or neglected items. Usually in the bathroom, there aren’t too many sentimental items so it makes this process MUCH easier.
Here are some ways to decide what to throw away:
- Check the Expiration Date. A website that’s a great tool I use when I can’t easily see the expiration date is Cosmetic Calculator. You choose the brand and type in the batch number and voila. It tells you when it was made and expired.
- Ask yourself: “Have I used this product in the past year?” If you haven’t (and it isn’t something like a First Aid kit that you don’t always need) then it gives you a good idea of what items are just taking up space.
- Check for duplicates. If you have more than one of something and it isn’t used often then go ahead and get rid of it.
- Check for self-care gifts you don’t really want. If there are items that you’ve been gifted but never use and keep it there just for a clear conscience then there’s a better use for that in the garbage lol. The harsh but honest truth.
4. Place Organization Bins in Drawer.
If you don’t already own any, purchase some varying sized bins that fit your drawer. This is important since compartmentalizing is the key to organizing. It’s easier to see everything you own and you can make each bin for a specific category. Go so far as even labelling the bins if it helps keep you organized.
Some tips that I keep in mind while shopping for bins:
- Vary the sizes of the bins. Sometimes you have larger products that need a bigger bin while the smaller bottles may not fit as nicely in the large bins.
- Get the skinnier bins for bottles that can stand upright. It helps keep them from falling down every time you open or close the drawer.
- Check for rubber lined, non-slip, organizer bins. These help the products stay in place as well. Because the worst thing would be to organize these items perfectly and then watch them all tumble when there’s the slightest movement. These rubber lined bins are a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
Here are some bins similar to the ones I use:
5. Wipe down all products.
This applies to the items that make it past the elimination round mentioned in step 3! Wipe them all down with a damp cloth. You want to get rid of all the spills, gunk, and dust that has built up over time so we can start fresh.
6. Organize items by category.
To elevate your drawers’ overall system and motivate you to keep the products organized over time, you’ll place your items by category.
For example:
- all hair care products will live on the left side of the drawer
- all bath care items will live in the center of the drawer
- all facial care items will live on the right side of the drawer, etc.
7. Organize items by height.
Organization is all about how items visually flow. When you take that extra step to place the products by height – going from tallest in the back to shortest in the front – it makes it easier on the eyes and more satisfying to look at. Another plus is that you’ll be able to see some of the labels on the products better.
8. Organize items by color.
Color is another trick to use and send a little shock of joy to your brain at the same time. Follow the old ROYGBV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet) saying, to place items in that order from left to right. Since many products also come in neutrals you can go by BGWT (Black, Grey, White, Tan) in that order.
