When it comes to summer vacation and the holidays, our guest bedrooms get put to use more often which is why itβs important to have them be in tip top shape for our friends and families. A lot of times guest bedrooms get neglected and look like they are lacking personality and decor pieces. This how-to guide on creating the most impressive guest bedroom will be your best friend when youβre trying to prep your home for visitors.
A good tip if youβre stuck on what needs to be included in your guest room is to think of what would typically be in your hotel room when you go on vacation! Then after you have the basics you can always customize it to your guestsβ taste with little thoughtful details.
1. DEEP CLEAN THE GUEST BEDROOM!

First and foremost, you must deep clean the guest bedroom. Oftentimes, the guest bedrooms go untouched for months on end and although it may look βcleanβ itβs full of dust that needs to be addressed. Bring out your vacuum and all your favorite cleaning supplies and get to work!!
This list of places that need to be cleaned will act as your starting off guide on what to work on:
- Vacuum or mop the floors.
- Dust all table tops and shelves with a cleaning spray to make sure itβs thoroughly cleaned.
- Empty closets and drawers of all your belongings so your guest can feel like they arenβt intruding into your personal space and can use it to store their own items! Donβt treat your guest room as storage.
- Clean windows with a glass cleaner.
- Throw your curtains in the washer.
- Wash all bed sheets, comforters, pillow cases, etc.
- Clean the walls of the room. All you need for this is mainly water and dish soap. This often goes ignored but the walls buildup so much dust over time and the corners of the walls typically are the favorite spots for spiderwebs and other things so pay special attention to these areas.
- Wipe down light fixtures and lamps. This is another spot that gets a lot of dust settlement.
- Disinfect door handles, drawer knobs, light switch etc.
- Clean your mattress. This is a favorite place for bed bugs and bacteria build up and typically goes unnoticed as well. It is recommended to clean your mattress every 6 months.
2. MUST HAVE A COMFY MATTRESS
There is absolutely nothing worse than getting a bad nightβs sleep. You want your guests to feel well-rested and ready to take on the day. Ensuring that you have a good quality mattress is so important for your guest bedroom. Just think, when you go to a hotel room one of the main things that sticks in your head is whether or not the bed was comfortable so itβs just the same when your close family and friends come to stay over. You donβt want to leave them with a bad impression and a backache.

Some places to purchase an affordable and comfortable mattress:
- Ikea
- Costco
- Linenspa
- Brooklyn Bedding
- Leesa
3. COZY BEDDING
Furthermore, bedding is of utmost importance. You must have great bed sheets, comforter, pillows, throw blankets, and throw pillows. Having good quality bedding does not automatically mean having expensive bedding. This article on Good Housekeepingβs blog will help you in what to look for in order to pick good quality bedding. Layering bedding is the secret to it looking like a hotel room. My design trick to creating a beautiful guest bedroom is making sure to stick to neutrals. Pick out a white comforter and white linens so that the guests can feel clean sleeping

Important Takeaways for Bedding:
- Have extra pillows. Basically, itβs better to have more than less in this sense. I love sleeping on at least two pillows so going to someones house and realizing thereβs only one is not a great feeling.
- Have extra blankets. Evidently, we donβt all have the same preference in temperature, so having extra blankets for your guests to feel cozy and not have to feel like theyβre being pushy by asking for additional items truly helps their experience and adds a thoughtful touch.
- Throw pillows and throw blankets elevate the look of the room! Generally, you wouldnβt think of these items as being a must have but they truly personalize the space and make it look well put together.
- Look up ways to fold your bedding to make it look like a hotel room!
4. NIGHT STAND ESSENTIALS:
The night stand is one of the most used places other than the bed because theyβll keep all their important items there throughout the day.

- Have a table lamp for reading.
- Put an accessory tray for their jewelry.
- Include a Water Carafe. This is such a thoughtful touch so that your guests donβt have to feel uncomfortable walking to the kitchen in the middle of the night to fill up a glass of water.
- Provide a reading book, magazine, notebook, and pen for some enjoyment.
- Candles on the bedside are also a plus for ambiance.
- An alarm clock is another great touch for your guests that donβt love sleeping next to their cell phones.
- A diffuser is another way to make your guest room feel like a spa.
5. PROVIDE A BASKET OR SHELF WITH TOWELS
Towels are most definitely a must have for your guests. Make sure to include different sizes of towels for their needs. Large towels for showering, face towels, and hand towels are a must. Putting them in a cute basket somewhere in the room as well as putting them on a shelf would be a great idea so that they can easily access them.

6. INCLUDE VARIOUS TOILETRIES
Another way to make your guests feel at home is by providing them all of the necessities when it comes to toiletries. Even if they pack their own sometimes it is easier to use items that are provided and be able to throw them away when done instead of packing a wet toothbrush, bar of soap and loofah in your luggage.

These are some basic toiletries to include in the guest room:
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Bar of Soap
- Body Wash
- Loofah
- Shampoo and Conditioner
- Face Wash
- Makeup Remover
- Cotton Swabs and Cotton Pads
- Hand Wash
- Lotion
- Razors and Shaving Cream
- Toilet Spray
- Body Scrub (to enhance the experience rather than just providing the bare minimum).
7. FLOOR LENGTH MIRROR
Further, having a floor length mirror is very beneficial for your guest so that they are able to look at their outfits fully rather than having to deal with a regular mirror on the dresser. You can buy a standalone floor length mirror or if you are short on space you can also get a mirror that you can attach to the back of the door or inside of a closet door.

8. WASTEBASKET
Surely, you will need to include a wastebasket in the room. I prefer the wastebaskets that are made of rattan or wicker since they look more like decor than simply a wastebasket.

9. LAUNDRY HAMPER
Unquestionably, your guests will have dirty clothes and if they are planning on washing them at your residence then it would be smart to have a laundry hamper for them to keep themselves organized.

10. FRESH FLOWERS
Flowers are undeniably a beautiful touch to any room. Picking out a thought out bouquet that goes with the aesthetic of the room will elevate the stay and make them feel extra special! My absolute favorite place to buy flowers is Trader Joeβs.

11. PROVIDE A CHARGER AND POWER STRIP

Sometimes an extra charger is needed and a power strip is very helpful especially when they need to charge their laptops and other tech items simultaneously.
12. ROBE AND SLIPPERS
Whenever I go to a hotel itβs always a plus when they include a robe and slippers so this is a beautiful touch to put in your guest bedroom. This surely is a luxurious bonus to add for your loved ones to enjoy.

13. SNACKS
The amount of times Iβve visited someone or gone to a hotel and needed a late night snack just to be disappointed by the lack of availability is unfathomable. Please do your guests a favor and provide them with some yummy, healthy snacks that they surely will enjoy and appreciate,

14. CARD WITH WIFI INFORMATION
Wifi has become a must have for all of us and itβs a kind gesture to your guest to leave them a card with the wifi username and password on it that way they can help themselves instead of having to ask you.

15. FAN
A fan is another important item especially during the hot summer months. A cute portable fan is truly all thatβs needed to make your guest feel more in control of the temperature and have them feel comfortable.

Guest Bedroom Bonus Tip:
-Create a basket with all the snack goodies and toiletries along with the wifi card so that it can look welcoming and thought out for your loved ones!
